Livingston Temple Softball League 05/28/17


Chabad (5-2) came out swinging, scoring 8 runs in the 1st
and finishing with 12 runs in the 5th to close out a 5 inning shortened game 24-5 over AABJD. With the win, Chabad stayed tied for first in the A division with B'nai Jeshurun who topped Sharey Tefilo Israel 28-7. In the victory for Chabad, shortstop and leadoff hitter, Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz was 5 for 5 with 2 doubles and scored 4 times while playing solid defense. Scott Bader was 4 for 4 and scored 3 times. David Levine was 4 for 5 with 4 doubles. Pitcher Peter Gelman was 3 for 5, scored 3 times and did not walk a batter. Dave Lysek had a double and a three run homer. Jeff Steil legged out a triple and had 2 more hits scoring three times. B'nai Brith won it's 3rd in a row (longest current winning streak in A) by a 13-7 margin over Pine Brook led on offense by Greg Weinberger (2-3, HR) and Gary Lubin (3-4, triple). BB's solid defense was anchored by Paul Velelis in the outfield, Alex Lee at 3rd and Wayne Neumann on the mound.

In the B division, Suburban Torah (5-1) stayed in 1st place defeating B'nai Israel 26-7 for their 5th in a row which is the longest winning streak of the year in the league. They were led by Steven Wengrofsky who had 3 home runs (including a grand slam) and 10 RBI's. Ner Tamid was the last team to beat Suburban Torah (week 1) and they set a team record this week. Trailing AABJD / Ohr Torah 11-5 with 1 out in the top of the 7th they proceeded to put 16 consecutive batters on base scoring 16 runs on the way to an unlikely 21-11 win. Five players had 2 hits in the highest scoring inning ever for Ner Tamid - Glen Handler, Mike Miller, Ron Festa, Mark Liebert and Ken Shapiro. Beth Shalom nipped B'nai Abraham 14-13 in a come from behind win. Down 11-6 in the bottom of the 6th they scored 7 times to take a 2 run lead. B'nai Abraham tied it up in the 7th but Phil Sperling scored the winning run on Jeff Katz' game winning hit. Zach Cohen had 4 hits and 3 runs in the victory. Phil Sperling 3 hits and 3 runs and Jeremy Kross also had 4 hits.

Livingston Temple Softball League 05/21/17

B’nai Jeshurun is having no problem with the move up from B to A.  They are now tied for 1st at 4-2 with Chabad and Sharey Tefilo and are the only team in the A division to have scored over 100 runs so far. They won the opener over Sharey Tefilo Israel Sunday by a 20-17 margin in an 8 inning game before losing the 2nd to Pine Brook 15-14. B’nai Brith got their first win of the season yesterday and kept it going by sweeping both ends of their DH. In the 1st game, Chabad took an early lead against BB in the first inning when Dave Levine hit a three-run homer into the woods at the Harrison school field. Chabad added to this total over the next two innings, taking a 6-0 lead into the top of the 4th inning. B'nai B'rith, which only had one hit up to that point, proceeded to bat around their order scoring nine runs taking a 9-6 lead enroute to an 18-11 victory. In game two, B'nai B'rith once again overcame an early deficit. After AABJD scored three runs in the top half of the first inning, Alex Lee started the comeback for B'nai B'rith by leading off the bottom of the first with a home run. B'nai B'rith scored three more times for a 4-3 lead on the way to a 16-10 win. Other notable standouts for BB were Gary Lubin and Paul Velelis who both hit triples and home runs, and Jared Resnick who also hit a home run to pad the lead for B'nai B'rith's second victory of the day, and the season. Agudath Israel split their two games defeating Pine Brook 20-9 led by Paul Aronoff who was 5-5 with a HR, They fell to STI 15-10 in the 2nd and Charlie Kessler was 4-4 in the loss.

Suburban Torah (4-1) swept their DH to move into 1st place all alone in the B division while B’nai Or (4-2) is in 2nd place after winning both their games. B'nai Or is also leading the entire league in runs scored with 117. Their first game win was 22-7 over B'nai Abraham where they got off to a big lead early. On offense, Eric Axler was 3-3 with a triple and 4 runs. Dennis Bellovin was 4-4 and scored 4 times and Scott Charles had a HR, 5 RBI's and was 3-4. In game 2 they defeated Beth Shalom 19-10 with Scott Charles adding another HR and 4 RBI's. Fred Kane scored 3 times in the win.

Livingston Temple Softball League 04/30/17

There is a 4 way tie for 1st in the A division at 3-1 after last week's games. Chabad (3-1) lost a close one to Sharey Tefilo Israel (3-1) 11-9. Then Chabad gave TBJ (3-1) their first loss of the season in a 16-8 decision. For the winners, both Peter Gelman and David Levine were 4-4 with a HR and 2 doubles. Agudath Israel (3-1) kept pace by defeating B'nai Brith 25-7 on the strength of a 15 run 3rd inning. They went on to beat AABJD 20-12 in the 2nd game. All 10 players for the winners had at least 2 hits in each game.

Beth Shalom (2-1) moved into a tie for 1st in the B division with a 19-2 win over AABJD/Ohr Torah. Steve Siegal had 4 RBI's and a HR and Phil Sperling had a HR and triple with 4 RBI's. Zach Cohen, Jeremy Kross and Mike Elchoness all had 3 hits and 3 runs. Russ Wachtler had a HR and both Mitch Berkey and Josh Lipschitz had 3 hits each. Suburban Torah (2-1) kept pace with a 16-12 win over B'nai Abraham. B'nai Or took their 1st game 16-1 over AABJD/Ohr Torah led by Gary Lilienfield who was 4-4 with 3 runs scored and Rick Simon who scored 4 times. In the 2nd game B'nai Or led 19-11 into the bottom of the 5th but B'nai Israel scored the next 12 runs eventually winning 23-20.  In the loss, Howard Moseson was 5-5 with 2 doubles a triple, 4 runs and 3 RBI's. Jason Cohen had a HR and 4 RBI's.  In Ner Tamid's 1st game win, Adam Festa had a HR as NT scored 11 runs in the 1st 2 innings holding on for a 12-9 win over B'nai Israel.
