Livingston Temple Softball League 06/26/16

No one involved in B'nai Brith's 1st game against Temple Sinai last Sunday could have thought there'd be a softball game more exciting and tension filled than that one (What did they know?). BB saw a 12 run lead evaporate against a relentless Temple Sinai who turned a 13-1 deficit into a 14-13 advantage. But B'nai Brith came back to tie it at 14 and scored 4 in the top of the 8th on the way to an 18-14 win.  Strong hitting by Andrew Kasdan, Alex Lee and Ian Rappaport helped keep B'nai Brith in the game and Paul Velelis had a 3 run homer for the winners. Clutch pitching by Wayne Neumann in the bottom of the 8th allowed BB to hold on for the win. Sharey Tefilo (9-1) won two more games clinching another regular season A division title in this rain shortened season. Against B’nai Brith (2nd game) the score was 4-1 going into the 5th when TSTI scored 6 runs to put the game away. They went  on to win 11-2 with Matt Katz, Cary Bayer and Steve Weissman each getting 2 hits, while Dave Dennenberg made several great plays in the field. In their 1st game, TSTI scored 6 runs in the 5th and 8 runs in the 6th to break open a close game enroute to a 28-13 win over Pine Brook. Eric Rothfeld led the attack with 5 hits, Cary Bayer had 4, and Jason Grebin, David Kramer, Matt Katz and Jeff Gaier each had 3. AABJD edged Chabad 25-24 highlighted by Jeff Falkenstein hitting for the cycle and Jay Gertleman’s homerun. In their first game though, AABJD fell to Temple Sholom 24-15 with Steve Holinstat going 5-6 (2 HR’s, 6 RBI’s) and Mark Fortgang 4-6 only a single short of the cycle in the win. Temple Sholom’s 2nd game was a 22-18 loss to Temple Sinai but in that contest Nate Treff was 4-4 and scored 4 times. Also for TSWE Jeff Goldberger was 4-5 and a double short of the cycle.

The B division race is  coming down to the 7/10 matchup between Agudath Israel (8-1) and B'nai Jeshurun (7-1) on what we are assuming will be the last day of the regular season. Agudath only had 1 game last week which was a 9-2 win over AABJD / Ohr Torah. Paul Aronoff had 2 homers in the win and was 3-3. Agudath played great defense led by Robert Field's tremendous diving catch. B'nai Jeshurun won both ends of their DH for their 7th straight win. They are also averaging a league low 6 runs allowed per game. But their next meeting vs. Agudath is against the highest scoring team in the league  (17 RPG). Ner Tamid lost both of their games but Justin Festa had 4 homers and a double on the day for NT. B'nai Or was down 8-5 to Temple Emanu-El in the 6th inning but batted around for 8 runs on the way to a 16-8 win. Eric Axler had a 3 run homer and 5 RBI's while Bill Schlosser and Fred Kain had 4 hits each. For Beth Shalom, Steve Siegal had a grand slam, 4 runs scored, 5 hits and 8 RBI's in a 23-7 win over AABJD / Ohr Torah. In their 2nd game, Beth Shalom was down 12-4 to B'nai Israel only because they threw out a runner at the plate and 2 runners at 3rd base (long strike from deep left center to 3rd by Eli Montag) with 3 outfield assists. Then they batted around in the bottom of the 6th to take a 13-12 lead only to fall in the 7th  16-13. In the loss, Eli Montag, Aaron Attermann and Steve Siegal all had homeruns. No game July4th weekend. Next games will be July 10th.

Sharey Tefilo Israel raised their record to 7-1 and opened up a 2 game lead in the A division after sweeping their DH Sunday. In their 1st game 22-16 victory over Temple Sinai TSTI was only up by one, 15-14 after five innings and then out scored Temple Sinai 7-2 in the last two. Matt Katz, David Kramer, Jason Grebin, Mark Licht, Steve Weissman and Eric Rothfeld each had three hits. Jason Grebin had two home runs. It was also a very close one with Chabad as they were up 8-5 after 5 on the way to a 12-7 win. Mark Licht pitched a great game and had three hits while Eric Rothfeld, Rob Lazarus, Matt Katz and Jared Bayer each had two hits.  Eric Rothfeld hit a towering home run into the Harrison trees. B'nai Brith defeated Chabad in the 1st game 10-4 led by the timely hitting of Andrew Kasdan, Paul Velelis,  Scott Samlin, and Gregg Weinberger, while the defense was led by Barry Sobel who made 2 diving catches in left center field right before the woods at Harrison. Game 2 was a 21-10 win over AABJD and while the entire team hit, once again Gregg Weinberger led the way at the plate by knocking in several runs. Behind the steady pitching of Wayne Neumann, the B's were once again led by fine defensive plays in the outfield by Kasdan, and Velelis, as well as a highlight reel play at the plate where second baseman Alex Lee took the cutoff and threw a strike to catcher Paul Kuchinsky who slapped on the tag to kill a potential game changing rally from AABJD. Pine Brook took their 1st game 20-5 over AABJD but lost the night cap 22-20 to Temple Sholom. Suburban Torah's 1st game was a 23-8 win over Temple Sholom.

Agudath Israel matched the best record in the League at 7-1 winning both of their games also. First a 27-19 win vs. B'nai Abraham paced by a Marc Davis grand slam. In the second game Agudath beat Temple Emanu-El 22-20 in a come back win.  Charlie Kessler, Mark Davis and Greg Adelsberg all homered in the 7 run top of the 7th. B'nai Jeshurun (5-1) extended the leagues longest current winning streak to 5 in a row with a 20-4 win over B'nai Israel. In that 5 game span BJ has given up only 23 runs (4.6 avg). B'nai Or kept up their winning streak beating AABJD/Ohr Torah 16-5 in the 1st game. A 7 run 1st and 4 run 2nd allowed them to coast the rest of the way. Solid defense all around. Adam Forman had two homers, scored 3 with 4 RBI'S. Keith Barbarosh had a 3 run homer and Jason Cohen had a 2 run homer, scored 3 and added 3 RBI'S. Bill Schlosser had 2 hits including a triple and 2 RBI'S. Game 2 was 11-4 over Beth Shalom in which Jason Cohen had a 2 run homer and scored twice. Adam Forman had a homer and 3 RBI'S. Todd Gutkin had 2 runs and 2 RBI'S. Good defense again helped secure the victory. Scott Charles ran down a deep shot to left center. Jason Cohen had 6 assists and a putout at shortstop. Todd Gutkin had 5 putouts at third. Jordan Byk pitched a solid game. Harris Kirsch had a solo homerun in the loss. Ner Tamid lost another one in the final inning this time 14-13 to AABJD/ Ohr Torah. TNT batted around in a seven-run fourth, capped by David Dreier's two-run homer, and opened up a 13-5 lead in the top of the fifth, but surrendered a grand slam in the fifth, and a two-run homer, two-run double and a single in the seventh to lose it. Next Sunday 6/26 another DH starting at 9 AM. Fields will be changing again so check carefully. After the regularly scheduled game we will be playing the makeup from 5/1. No games July 4th weekend. The last week of the season will be a DH on 7/10 with the playoffs to follow 7/17.

Livingston Temple Softball League 06/05/16

It turns out if it was not for the early start because of the Israeli Day Parade we would have been rained out again. And the streak would not have ended because Sharey Tefilo Israel (5-1) finally lost a game after 43 wins in a row. It will be a while before any team matches that feat again since it was over a 3 year span. Their last prior loss was on 7/7/13 to B'nai Jeshurun. Suburban Torah pulled off the upset with the aid of the 9 player rule. They were able to build a 14-5 lead after 4 and just managed ( something nobody else was able to do for a long time) to hold on for a 16-14 win. 3 teams are at 4-2 only 1 game back of STI in the A division- Pine Brook, AABJD and Temple Sinai. Chabad (3-3) defeated Pine Brook 28-13 despite numerous injuries (75 year old Bernie Neustadt scored as a pinch runner). Also for the winners, Scott Bader had 4 hits, Jon Tishlas 3 hits, Dave Levine had a homer, double and 2 singles and scored 3 times. Jeff Steil had 5 hits including a double and triple. Peter Gelman pitched well and had 5 hits. Evan Bell had 4 hits and 3 runs. Eric Latzman blasted 2 homeruns. Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz had 4 hits, 4 runs and also homered. Nick Catz was 3/3 with a triple and 5 runs. Keith Bader had 3 RBI's and 3 hits. AABJD defeated Temple Sinai  with long doubles into the trees at Harrison from Jay Gertleman and Ariel Fournier. Greg Zuckerman added 2 RBI's and pitcher Chaim Goldman only gave up 2 earned runs. B'nai Brith won their match up with Temple Sholom 21-9.

Agudath Israel (5-1) maintained their hold on 1st in the B division narrowly getting by Ner Tamid 9-8. Robert Field's 3 run homer in the bottom of the paved the way to a 1st inning tie at 4 for Agudath. Mike Miller's 3rd hit of the game tied it at 6 in the top of the 6th for Ner Tamid and NT took the lead in the same inning 8-6 after Jeff Bernstein's single. But David Lurie's 2 run triple in the bottom of the 7th tied it up again. Dave went on to score the winning run. B'nai Jeshurun (4-1) got the best of Temple Emanu-El 13-2 and now have the longest winning streak in the league at 4 in a row. B'nai Israel defeated AABJD/Ohr Torah 26-10. B'nai Abraham put on an offensive show led by Craig Schachter (4 hits, 2B, 5 runs) and Scott Levy (9 RBI's, 2 HR's, 2B, 3B, 4 runs) in their win over Beth Shalom 24-9. Craig also made some great defensive plays in left while Scott robbed a homerun from Beth Shalom grabbing a line drive in center with his back to the plate.

No games next Sunday. We are back on 6/19. The plan is to finish the season with all double headers. As soon as we figure out the exact schedule it will be posted. We are not going to have a full season and we are trying to make sure everyone in B plays each other at least 1 time since it is an unbalanced schedule.
