Week 6 Writeup 5/18/14

Livingston Temple Softball League 05/18/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel (5-0) remained undefeated on top of the A division with an 18-6 win over Temple Emanu-El. The E-Men scored 4 early to take the lead but 8 runs in the bottom of the 3rd put TSTI up for good. B'nai Jeshurun (5-1) exploded for a 31-5 win over B'nai Shalom for their 5th win in a row tying TSTI for the longest win streak in the A division this season. TBJ lost their first game by 1 run and have now scored 61 more runs than they have given up which is 2nd only to Sharey Tefilo Israel (+62). AABJD got the best of Pine Brook by a 13-5 margin. In the win Kenny Falkenstein hit a 3 run homer, Jay Gertleman had 2 triples and Doug Eisenberg had a 2 run triple. B'nai Abraham forfeited to Temple Sinai for the first no contest of the year.

Agudath Israel (6-0) kept their league longest winning streak alive by beating Chabad 12-9. The game was tied early at 6 but a 5 run 4th put CAI up for the duration. Hitting leaders were Mark Davis 2 for 2, double, walk, 3 RBI's and Charlie Kessler 2 for 3 with a triple and 3 RBI's. In their 6 wins, CAI has a 1 run win, two 2 run wins and one 3 run win. Temple Sholom of West Essex (5-1) maintained their hold on 2nd in the B division with a hard fought 13-10 win over Ner Tamid. Each team had only 9 players and Ner Tamid broke a 9-9 tie with a Josh Doros homerun in the bottom of the 6th. With 2 batters out in the top of the 7th and nobody on, Temple Sholom rallied for 4 runs and held Ner Tamid scoreless for the win. In the victory, Mark Wolf was 4-4 with a walk and Jeff Shapiro was 4-5, with Jeff Goldberger knocking in the tying and winning runs.  B'nai Brith(4-2) won their 4th in a row with a 17-2 victory over B'nai Israel. After losing their first 2 games BB has now won the last 4 by an average of 14 runs per game. For the winners Steve Miller had a triple and a homerun and Jared Resnick had 2 homers. Suburban Torah (4-2) batted around in two separate 8 run innings which was enough to get by Beth Shalom 17-11. In the loss, Doug Netburn had a 3 run homer and a double with 5 RBI's on the day. B'nai Or kept the hits coming in a 21-3 win over AABJD/Ohr Torah. Jason Cohen, Keith Barbarosh, Scott Charles and Adam Forman each homered. Keith, Scott and Adam each had 4 RBI's. 10 players scored and 9 players had RBI's.

Week 5 Writeup 5/11/14

Livingston Temple Softball League 05/11/14

In the A division last week Temple B'nai Jeshurun (4-1) defeated Temple Sinai 17-12 in 8 innings. TBJ took the lead in an 8 run 4th inning which was highlighted by Paul Talbot's  3 run homer. All 8 runs were scored with 2 outs. Sinai tied the score with 2 outs in the 7th but TBJ came back with a 5 run 8th for the win. The 1-2 matchup between AABJD (3-1) and Sharey Tefilo Israel had to be postponed (wet field) and will be made up as a double header 6/8. Pine Brook edged B'nai Shalom 15-12 and B'nai Abraham got the best of Temple Emanu-El by the score of 24-9.


Agudath Israel (5-0) remained undefeated in the B division with a 25-11 win over B'nai Israel. The winners had runs in every inning with each batter scoring at least once. The offensive onslaught was led by Greg Adelsberg who was 4-5 with a homer, double and 5 RBI's. In the closest game of the day Suburban Torah got a walk off triple from Jeff Suskind to defeat Chabad 11-10. B'nai Brith won in 6 innings topping B'nai Or 21-6. Temple Sholom of West Essex (4-1) combined solid defense with hits from everyone in the lineup to defeat AABJD/Ohr Torah 27-11. Beth Shalom and Ner Tamid had a back and forth battle with a lot of extra base hits on both sides. Beth Shalom erased a 5-4 deficit with an 8 run bottom of the 3rd. Ner Tamid scored 4 in the 5th to tighten it up but 5 more from Beth Shalom made it 17-9 going into the 6th. Then Ner Tamid had a 7 run inning to make it a 1 run game before falling 21-16. For the winners, Zach Cohen had 3 hits, 4 RBI’s and scored 4 times. Also, Aaron Attermann had 2 triples and 5 RBI’s while Neil Grossman was 4-4 with a double, 4 RBI’s including a 2 run homer. In the loss, Justin Festa had 4 hits including a triple and Josh Doros ( 3 hits) also had a triple.

Week 4 Writeup 5/4/14

Livingston Temple Softball League 05/04/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel (4-0) played their closest game yet just edging Pinebrook by 1 run. TSTI was down 8-2 after 3 innings and 11-5 after 5 innings but a 6 run burst in the top of the 6th, highlighted by a sliding Steve Weisman who avoided a tagout at the plate, knotted the game at 11. Pinebrook was held scoreless in the bottom of the frame and some clutch hitting by Cary Bayer gave TSTI a 13-11 lead into the bottom of the 7th as they held on for the 13-12 victory after a line drive back to pitcher Mark Licht ended the game.  AABJD bounced back with a 23-10 win over Temple Sinai. For the winners, Kenny Falkenstein hit a 2 run homer, Doug Eisenberg had a 2 run triple, Ariel Fournier had a 2 run triple, and Josh Kaplan hit a 2 run double. also, Jay Gertleman, whose wife Debbie gave birth to a baby girl last Wednesday, added a 2 run double.  With the wind blowing in B'nai Abraham defeated B'nai Shalom 4-2 which is the lowest score in the league since the wooden bat era. Also in A division play B'nai Jeshurun topped Temple Emanu-El 26-3.
Agudath Israel remained undefeated  in the B division with a 31-13 win over Ner Tamid.  CAI had 14 runs in the first 2 innings but Ner Tamid also had 12 in the first 3 innings to keep it close before the game got out of reach.  For CAI it was Charlie Kessler (5-5, 3 doubles, 4 runs, 4 RBI), Paul Aronoff (5-5, double, 5 runs), Jeff Weinstock (double, triple, 5 RBI), Greg Adelsberg (HR, 6 RBI), Mark Davis (HR) and Andy Brown (HR). Temple Sholom (3-1) kept pace with the leaders beating B'nai Or 14-8. The game went back and forth for a while but three 4 run innings in a row helped Temple Sholom pull away for the win. The hitting was led by Jeff Walsh who was 3-3 with 2 clutch 2 out hits for RBI's and Brian Altschul who was 2 for 2. Beth Shalom lost their 2nd in a row in the bottom of the 7th - this time to B'nai Israel 12-11. With a 1st inning 2 run homerun from Doug Netburn , 2 run single from Harris Kirsch and 2 run double by Mitch Berkey, Beth Shalom was up 7-1 early. They led by 10-7 after 5 but could not hold off B'nai Israel who came through with the hits they needed in the bottom of the 6th and 7th. Also, B'nai Brith beat Chabad 12-9 while Suburbam Torah got the best of AABJD/Ohr Torah 29-18.

Week 3 Writeup 4/27/14

Livingston Temple Softball League 04/27/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel (3-0) continued their hot start in the A division with a 20-9 win over Temple Sinai. It was close for a while even with TSTI going up 4-0 early after Eric Rothfeld's first inning home run. Because in the top of the 2nd Temple Sinai scored 5 to take the lead. TSTI came right back in the bottom of the inning with 7 more but 4 more from Temple Sinai in the 3rd and 4th narrowed the margin again at 11-9. An outstanding diving catch in center field by Dave Denenberg ended Temple Sinai's scoring and TSTI plated the last 9 runs from that point. David Kramer added to the offense with 2 homeruns over the rightfield fence at the field behind the High School. B'nai Shalom (2-1) notched their 2nd in a row with a 22-4 win over AABJD. Scoring 11 in the 1st and 9 in the 4th it was over early. For the winners, David Katz, Mark Frankel and Greg Frankel were all 4-4, Keith Bader drove in 4 runs and Mike Volpe homered. Temple B'nai Jeshurun (2-1) defeated B'nai Abraham 14-11 led by long homeruns from Marc Weinstein and Paul Talbert. Dan Jacobs had 3 hits and scored 3 runs in the win. Pine Brook was up 14-0 after 3 and coasted to a 24-11 win over Temple Emanu-El. Steve Horowitz and Adam Steckleman both went 4-4  for PB while Michael Brachfeld and David Reiss also homered.

In the B division only Agudath Israel (3-0) remained unbeaten with a close 10-9 last inning win over Beth Shalom (2-1). BS got off to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Doug Netburn's (3-3, 3 RBI's, 3 runs) 1st inning homer. CAI answered with a total of 6 in the 1st and 3rd but a 5 run 6th put Beth Shalom up 9-8. It looked like Charlie Kessler tied it up for sure in the bottom of the 6th but Phil Sperling took away the sure home run with a tremendous defensive play in centerfield. Beth Shalom failed to score in the 7th and Paul Aronoff (4-4, 3 runs, 3 RBI's) hit the game winning 2 run double with 1 out. Also for the winners, Simeon Gutman had 2 hits and 4 RBI's while Mark Davis went 3 for 3 with a triple and 3 RBI's. In the loss, Jeff Wasserman was 3-3 and Neil Grossman had 3 RBI's. Chabad (2-1) outlasted B'nai Israel 10-8 getting the last out of the game with a tag play at the plate by Steve Goldman. Pitcher Tuvia Sahl had 3 hits and an RBI in the win. Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz had a bases loaded 2 run double which was followed by a 2 run triple from Evan Bell. Eric Latzman and Donny Kanovsky had 3 hits each. Ner Tamid (2-1) is off to their best start ever and in a 4 way tie for 2nd place after they defeated AABJD/Ohr Torah 17-7. Their offense was led by Justin Festa with 4 hits and Rob Crum with two home runs. Temple Sholom of West Essex is also 2-1 and tied for 2nd but that was after they suffered their first loss of the season, losing to B'nai Brith (1-2) by the score of 26-5.  Suburban Torah got their first win of the season with a 17-3 win over B'nai Or.

Week 2 Writeup 4/20/14

Livingston Temple Softball League 04/20/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel continued to roll with a 29-12 win over B'nai Abraham.  TSTI had a 19-1 lead before B'nai Abraham came back with a 10 run 4th inning but it was too big a deficit to overcome. In the win at Okner, Carey Bayer hit the wall for a triple and Steve Weisman led the defense with a stellar play.  TSTI has now won their first 2 games by an average score of 19 runs. B'nai Shalom notched their first win but it took 8 innings. They were ahead by 9-3 into the bottom of the 6th but Temple Sinai scored 6 to tie it up. Greg Frankel's 2nd homerun of the day gave them a 1 run lead in the top of the 7th but Sinai came right back to tie it up again. In the 8th it was an RBI single by Bennett Schwartz and a 2 run double by Keith Bader setting up the 13-11 win for B'nai Shalom. In the victory both Harry Katz and Mike Volpe were 3 for 4 while Larry Prince had a big 2 run triple. AABJD showed they belong back in the A division defeating Temple Emanu-El  26-16.  For the winners, Jay Gertleman had a 2 run homer, Rafi Abromowitz had a 3 run homer, and Ariel Fournier had a 2 run homer. Also, 4 RBI's each for Andrew Israeli and Josh Kaplan. The final game in the A division saw B'nai Jeshurun beat Pine Brook 11-6.  
Temple Sholom of West Essex has established themselves as the clear favorite in the B division after winning their 2nd game in a row by at least 15 runs. This time it was a 22-7 win over Chabad. Every player on Temple Sholom had at least one hit with Glenn Lieberman and Jeff Goldberger both 3-3. The team was solid defensively and for the 2nd game in a row first baseman Dan Natt turned an unassisted double play.  
In a close high scoring affair Beth Shalom outlasted B'nai Brith 21-17. Jared Resnick started things off for B'nai Brith with a 3 run homer in the first. After Wayne Neumann's 2 run triple climaxed an 8 run 9 hit 4th inning barrage B'nai Brith had a 17-10 lead. But BB would not score again and Beth Shalom opened the bottom of the 6th inning with a lead off triple by Harris Kirsch followed by 8 consecutive hits for 9 runs to take a 21-17 lead into the final frame.  Zach Cohen (double), Doug Netburn (triple), Jeff Wasserman, Neil Grossman, and Aaron Attermann (triple) all had 3 hits. Agudath Israel vs. Suburban Torah was a seesaw battle starting with a 2 run homer by Scott Reis for CAI in the first inning. But Suburban Torah led by 4 runs when CAI erupted for 7 runs in the 6th on the way to the 13-11 win. The big inning included a 2 run homer by Simeon Gutman. Greg Adelsberg also homered for Agudath and all 10 players scored at least 1 run. Ner Tamid was playing B'nai Or and with homeruns from Josh Doros and Justin Festa, Ner Tamid had a 6-5 lead over B'nai Or in the 4th inning. But B'nai Or came back with 3 in the 5th and 4 in the 6th on the way to a 15-9 lead into the bottom of the 7th. After the bottom of Ner Tamid's line up came through with 4 consecutive hits NT had the bases loaded down 15-12 with 2 outs but the game ended with a fly out to left field. For the winners, Keith Barbarosh and Craig Rosen each had 3 RBI's and 3 hits, 12 of the 13 batters had at least 1 hit, 10 different players scored and 9 different players drove in a run. Jordan Byk returned to pitch a fine game after missing most of last season.  In other action B'nai Israel defeated AABJD / Ohr Torah 25-12.

Week 1 Writeup 4/13/14

Livingston Temple Softball League 04/13/14

Temple Sinai exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 10-5 lead over the E-Men but Temple Emanu-El answered with 14 runs in the top of the 4th on the way to a 26-14 win. Homeruns for the E-Men came from Adam Phelps, Don Newell and Marc Berger. Tim O'Neil added a triple and Dennis Bellovin, Glen Handler and Andrew Greenberg also had multiple hits.  The defending champions of the A division, Sharey Tefilo Israel, had no trouble in their first game back defeating B'nai Shalom 24-3. It was a solid team effort with good all around defense and the whole lineup chipping in with singles and doubles as they scored in every inning. The defending champions of last year's B division reintroduced themselves into the A division by edging B'nai Jeshurun 12-11. Doug Eisenberg had a 3 run triple and Jeff Falkenstein had a 2 run single in the 6th. Ariel Fournier had an RBI single in the 6th to drive in the go ahead run. Also in the upper division, Pinebrook had an opening day win over B'nai Abraham by the score of 18-8.

Temple Sholom of West Essex served notice to the rest of the B division handling their first game down there ever with a  21-6 win over B'nai Israel. The Temple Sholom offense started strong with 7 in the first and never looked back. Jeff Shapiro had a homerun and Jeff Goldberger had 2 four baggers to lead the winners. The defense turned 2 double plays including an unassisted DP by first baseman Dan Natt. Chabad opened up their season with a 25-10 win over AABJD / Ohr Torah with homeruns from Evan Bell, Jon Tlishas, and Tuvia Sahl. Jeff Stiel added a 3 run double. Agudath Israel won a close one against B'nai Brith 8-6. In the win, 6 players had 2 hits and James Gurland had 3 hits including an RBI double in the 7th adding an important insurance run. Beth Shalom played B'nai Or behind the high school on Joe Rizzuto's old field. After a moment of silence in Joe's honor all the bats remained silent for 2 innings also. B'nai Or scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd but Beth Shalom bounced back with 7 in the 4th and held on for an 11-7 win. On offense Jonathan Ruditser had 3 hits including a triple. Doug Netburn had a 3 run homer. Michael Elchoness had a solo shot and Zach Cohen had a triple. The outfield had some outstanding defensive plays from Mark Konstandt, Phil Sperling, Doug Netburn and Jeff Katz. Ner Tamid is tied for 1st place for the first time since 2005 when they also beat Suburban Torah in the opener. This time it was a 17-12 victory which was led by Rob Crum and Ron Festa with 4 hits each. Mike Miller added 3.
