Livingston Temple Softball League 06/29/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel (12-0) has locked up the top seed in the A division with 2 weeks to go. B'nai Jeshurun's (9-3) previous game against TSTI was a 9-8 loss but this time it was over much earlier. Pitching for the undefeated first place team was Cary Bayer who gave up only 3 runs with a strong defensive effort behind him. The play of the game was leftfielder Matt Katz' throw to catcher Rob Lazarus for a put out at the plate. A 3 run homer from Jason Grebin followed by a solo shot from Corey Feigenbaum highlighted an offense that scored in every inning of the 25-3 victory. In 2002 Temple Emanu-El was 17-0 but that was still when there were 3 divisions - A,B & C. The E-Men came right back in 2003 to go 17-0 in the first year we went to only 2 divisions. AABJD (8-4) just nipped B'nai Abraham 13-12 as Chaim Goldman knocked in the tying run and Doni Israel knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.  B'nai Shalom were 14-2 winners over Temple Emanu-El after their infield turned 4 double plays. Offensive stars were Greg Frankel with 4 hits and Dave Helderman (HR, 2B, 2 singles). Also, Pine Brook edged Temple Sinai 15-14.

All 3 of the top teams in the B division lost 1 run games this past week in the final inning. Ner Tamid thought they were sure losers trailing 12-6 going into the top of the 7th to 1st place Agudath Israel (9-3). But the bottom of the lineup started a rally which was capped by Steve Penney's 2 run single for a 7 run inning to give them a 1 run lead. They still had to sweat out a bases loaded bottom of the 7th but held one of the most potent offenses in the league scoreless for the 13-12 win. In the loss, Scott Reiss had 3 hits and a homerun while Greg Adelsberg added a double, HR and 4 RBI's. Unless we have some more surprises next week, this sets up a battle for the final playoff spot in the last week of the season between Ner Tamid and B'nai Israel with the winner probably getting the 8 seed. In a game that was tight the whole way, Temple Sholom (9-3) scored a run with 2 outs in the top of the 7th to tie B'nai Or at 9. Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the inning B'nai Or failed to score and it went to the 8th. Temple Sholom was held in the top of the 8th and in the bottom of the inning, with the bases loaded and 1 out, a line drive to center allowed winning pitcher Jordan Byk to tag up and score on a close play at the plate for the 10-9 victory. For the winners, Adam Forman was 4-4 with 2 RBI's and Keith Barbarosh had 3 hits. After a 1-4 start B'nai Or has now won 6 of their last 7.  Chabad was down 8-1 early to B'nai Brith (8-4) but in the 5th inning 9 men in a row reached base safely including 3 doubles for a 7 run outburst to tie the game.  Chabad led 11-10 going into the bottom of the 7th and with the bases loaded and two outs got the final force out at 2nd to preserve the win. For Chabad, John Tishlas was 4-5 and Joe Boettinger was 3-5 with a HR. David Levine, Eric Latzman and Craig Fried were also 3-5. B'nai Israel scored 5 in the 3rd to get to within 8-7 but Beth Shalom came back with 13 runs in the next 2 innings for the 21-11 win. The defensive play of the day was a Mark Konstandt (LF) to Zach Cohen (SS) to Jeff Katz (C) 7-6-2 play at the plate for a put out which could not have been closer. Every player in Beth Shalom's lineup scored at least 1 run in the balanced attack.  In the only other game of the B division Suburban Torah defeated Ohr Torah 9-2.

Livingston Temple Softball League 06/22/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel (11-0) won 2 more games on the way to a possible undefeated season opening up a 2 game lead in the A division. In their 1st game Sunday they were led by home runs from Jason Grebin and Corey Feigenbaum to defeat a depleted B'nai Shalom team 16-1. Their 2nd game was a makeup of the 5th week rainout against AABJD and they were down 9-4 into the bottom of the 4th inning. The STI bats finally came alive with 6 runs for a 10-9 lead on the way to an eventual 14-11 win.  Excellent hitting by Jeff Gaier who was 5 for 5 on the day helped keep every rally alive. STI has scored the most runs (198) and given up the least (78) in the League but is not that far ahead of 2nd place B'nai Jeshurun (9-2) who have scored 188 and given up 85. In B'nai Jeshurun's game it was Eli Heitin with 2 home runs and a 2 run sacrifice fly as TBJ defeated AABJD 19-4. B'nai Abraham were 13-5 winners over Pine Brook led by ss Rob Kurtz playing a stellar shortstop, turning a double play and adding a 3 run triple all with a new hip. Temple Sinai defeated Temple Emanu-El 22-12.

In B division action all the top teams were winners starting with Agudath Israel (9-2) who defeated Ohr Torah 23-8. For the winners, Scott Reis returned from the IR with a homer, double, 3 RBI's and 3 runs. Paul Aronoff was 3-3 with 2 doubles. Charlie Kessler had 3 hits including a triple and Scott Reiser had 3 hits with two doubles and 3 runs. Temple Sholom (9-2) kept pace with a win over Suburban Torah using timely hitting to just maintain the lead all game. A 4 run top of the 7th gave them enough breathing room for the 16-10 win as they held ST scoreless in their final at bat. All the big bats on B'nai Brith (8-3) were too much for Ner Tamid who lost a 17-11 game despite Justin Festa's 3 run homer and some highlight reel catches in the outfield. The Festa family, Ron, Adam & Justin, combined for 7 hits in the loss. B'nai Or led the entire game against B'nai Israel and were ahead by scores of 9-1 and 14-6 but after 6 innings they were only ahead 19-18. In the top of the 7th, Craig Rosen (6 RBI's) came through with a bases clearing double to key a 3 run inning for B'nai Or. B'nai Israel had scored in every inning to that point but went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th giving B'nai Or the 22-18 win. Also for the winners, Eric Axler (3 hits, 2 RBI's, 4 runs), Keith Barbarosh (3 hits, 4 runs, 3 RBI's) and Todd Gutkin (3 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBI's). Chabad took an early 1-0 lead on Beth Shalom with a homerun from Joe Boettinger but Beth Shalom came back with 3 runs to take their first lead. 5 unanswered runs gave Chabad a 6-3 lead but a 6 run 4th put Beth Shalom ahead 9-6. Chabad answered right back with a 4 run 5th but Beth Shalom added 5 more that inning for their 3rd lead at 14-10. That was it for Beth Shalom though and Chabad had 7 unanswered runs for the 17-14 win. For the winners, Eric Latzman had 4 hits and 3 runs, Jeff Steil had 3 hits and 3 runs, Mike Galatioto had 3 hits and 3 runs and David Levine added a double and a triple. In the loss, Phil Sperling, Zach Cohen, Carl Landsman, Howard Attermann and Jeff Wasserman all had 3 hits. Jeff Wasserman also had 4 RBI's and 3 runs, and Bob Sperling had 3 RBI's. Scott Sperling scored 3 runs and Doug Netburn had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI's. Only 3 weeks to go in the regular season. New players can be added to the roster but will not be eligible for the playoffs.

Livingston Temple Softball League 06/15/14

Sharey Tefilo Israel (9-0) remained undefeated with a 24-9 win over Temple Sinai.  Jason Grebin had a first inning homerun for TSTI but Temple Sinai  still took an early 4-1 lead. Over the next 3 innings TSTI's balanced attack gave them a big lead while some great defensive plays (David Kramer SS, Larry Feigenbaum OF, Steve Weisman OF) held Temple Sinai at bay for the eventual 6 inning win. B'nai Jeshurun (8-2) remained 2 games back in the loss column with a 22-5 win over B'nai Abraham. Also 2 games back is AABJD (7-2) after a 16-4 win over B'nai Shalom. The winners used a combination of bloopers and dunkers into short center for the victory which was paced by Ariel Fournier and Josh Kaplan with 3 RBI's each. Pine Brook edged Temple Emanu-El 6-5 in the tightest A division game of the day.
In the 2nd week of the season Beth Shalom defeated B'nai Brith to give them an 0-2 start but they bounced back with 7 consecutive wins. The rematch was this week and B'nai Brith's (7-3) 7 game winning streak came to an end as Beth Shalom held on for another win (15-13) in a back and forth battle. Tied at 2 after 2 innings Beth Shalom batted around for 7 third inning runs highlighted by Jared Berkey's 3 run homer (3 hits, 5 RBI's on the day). But B'nai Brith came back with 3 in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th to take a 10-9 lead. Beth Shalom was not finished and they batted around again in the 5th for 6 runs while B'nai Brith added 3 in the bottom of the inning making it 15-13. Over the final 2 innings neither team scored. In the loss, Jason Crimmons had 2 home runs and the first one was a fly ball way over the left field wall at Okner. For 3 innings Temple Sholom of West Essex and Chabad were pretty much deadlocked. In the 4th inning TSWE (8-2) erupted for 7 runs and held Chabad scoreless for 3 more innings for a 14-8 win and a share of 1st place in the B division. Suburban Torah bounced back from 2 losses last week with an impressive 11-4 win over 1st place Agudath Israel (8-2). B'nai Or defeated Ner Tamid 11-10 with a walk off 7th inning double by Craig Rosen (3 hits, 2 doubles, 4 RBI's).The game saw 4 lead changes and was tied 10-10 going into the bottom of the 7th after Ner Tamid stranded 3 runners in the top of the inning. 8 of the 11 runs scored by B'nai Or crossed the plate with 2 outs. Paul Delson had 2hits and 2 RBI's while Adam Lazer had 3 hits for the winners. Defensively B'nai Or had 2 double plays and a few diving stops. Congratulations to Ohr Torah winning their first game of the season 9-6 over B'nai Israel.

Only 4 weeks to go for the regular season. The rosters are posted on the website and if there is any misinformation please let us know.
