Livingston Temple Softball League 05/28/17
Chabad (5-2) came out swinging, scoring 8 runs in the 1st
and finishing with 12 runs in the 5th to close out a 5 inning
shortened game 24-5 over AABJD. With the win, Chabad stayed tied for first in
the A division with B'nai Jeshurun who topped Sharey Tefilo Israel 28-7. In the
victory for Chabad, shortstop and leadoff hitter, Rabbi Mendy Kasowitz was 5 for 5 with 2 doubles and
scored 4 times while playing solid defense. Scott Bader was 4 for 4 and scored 3
times. David Levine was 4
for 5 with 4 doubles. Pitcher Peter Gelman was 3
for 5, scored 3 times and did not walk a batter. Dave Lysek had a double
and a three run homer. Jeff Steil legged out a triple and had 2 more hits
scoring three times. B'nai Brith won it's 3rd in a row (longest current winning
streak in A) by a 13-7 margin over Pine Brook led on offense by Greg Weinberger
(2-3, HR) and Gary Lubin (3-4, triple). BB's solid defense was anchored by Paul
Velelis in the outfield, Alex Lee at 3rd and Wayne Neumann on the mound.
In the B division,
Suburban Torah (5-1) stayed in 1st place defeating B'nai Israel 26-7 for their
5th in a row which is the longest winning streak of the year in the league.
They were led by Steven Wengrofsky who had 3 home runs (including a grand slam)
and 10 RBI's. Ner Tamid was the last team to beat Suburban Torah (week 1) and
they set a team record this week. Trailing AABJD / Ohr Torah 11-5 with 1 out in
the top of the 7th they proceeded to put 16 consecutive batters on base scoring
16 runs on the way to an unlikely 21-11 win. Five players had 2 hits in the
highest scoring inning ever for Ner Tamid - Glen Handler, Mike Miller, Ron
Festa, Mark Liebert and Ken Shapiro. Beth Shalom nipped B'nai Abraham 14-13 in
a come from behind win. Down 11-6 in the bottom of the 6th they scored 7 times
to take a 2 run lead. B'nai Abraham tied it up in the 7th but Phil Sperling
scored the winning run on Jeff Katz' game winning hit. Zach Cohen had 4 hits
and 3 runs in the victory. Phil Sperling 3 hits and 3 runs and Jeremy Kross
also had 4 hits.
