The higher seeded team won every game in the 1st and 2nd round of
yesterday's playoffs in both the A and B divisions. During the regular season
the visiting teams held a 71-55 advantage for the 126 games played. But this
past Sunday the home teams were 12-0 to make up most of the deficit. Top seeded
Sharey Tefilo Israel won their first game by a 15-3 margin over B'nai Jeshurun.
4th seeded Temple Sinai edged 5th seeded Suburban Torah 9-6 to set up a meeting
with the 1st place team in the 2nd round. For 4 innings STI only led by 1 run at
7-6 but last year's champs scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a
15-6 lead. 5 runs from Temple Sinai in the top of the 6th made it 15-11 but
that was how the game ended for Sharey Tefilo Israel's 37th win in a row and a 3rd
consecutive date in the A division final. In the other half of the A draw, 2nd
seeded AABJD defeated B'nai Shalom 15-14 in a game that they led all the way
but only narrowly. For the winners, Jay Gertleman and Rafi Abramowitz both
homered. 3rd seeded Pinebrook were 14-12 winners over Temple Sholom of West
Essex to move into the semifinals against AABJD. Rafi Abramowitz led the way
with another homerun and both Marty Moskovitz and Doni Israel had 3 RBI's in AABJD's
18-13 win as they moved into the final against Sharey Tefilo Israel.
In the B division's 1st
round, B'nai Brith had no problem with B'nai Abraham in a 25-10 win. The top
seeded B division team was led by the strong hitting of Ken Merber, Steve
Miller, Ian Rappaport and Paul Velelis. Steve Weiner also batted 1.000 in the
win. Jason Crimmins made the play of the game with a back to the plate over the
shoulder grab of a long drive in center field to take away a scoring threat from B'nai Abraham.
#2 seeded Chabad had a little more trouble in their first matchup getting by
7th seeded B'nai Israel 15-10. Chabad of West Orange got on the scoreboard early scoring 4 in the first. Then
the game went back and forth. BI was up by 4 runs in the 4th. In the 5th CWO
brought 8 runners across the plate to go up for good. Eric Latzman shut down
a possible rally for BI in the 6th. With no one out and
men on first and second he picked a short hop at third, stepped on the bag and fired a strike to first
for a double play. For CWO: leadoff Donny Kanovsky was 2/3 and scored twice.
Jon Tishlas was 3/3 plus a walk and scored 3 times. Evan Bell was 4/4. Jeff
Stiel was 3/3 with 3 RBI's and 2 doubles. Peter Gelman didn't walk anyone,
scored twice and had a 2 run double in the first. # 3 seed Beth Shalom led the whole way against
Temple Emanu-El but some great defensive plays from the E-Men's Gary Lubin and
a 2 run HR from Hal Bellovin kept the game close. Beth Shalom finally gained an
11-7 win over a team that they had not beaten in the playoffs for well over 10
years. In the win, Mark Konstandt (3-3, 2 runs), Zach Cohen (2B, 2 runs), Gabe
Ollins (2-3, 2 RBI's) and Eric Naggar (2-3 2 RBI's). # 4 seeded B'nai Or was
matched against # 5 Agudath Israel in the 1st round and they jumped out to a
4-0 lead. But Agudath Israel led by Paul Aronoff (5-5) were ahead 9-4 by the
4th inning. In the bottom of the 4th and 5th B'nai Or scored 2runs each to cut
the deficit to 9-8. While the CAI bats went cold B'nai Or added 6 more in the
6th and won it 14-9. Pitcher Bill Schlosser made 2 putouts, had 3 assists and
hit a single, double and triple scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for the winners.
Also, Keith Barbarosh ann Todd Gutkin each had 3 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI's. Eric
Axler had 3 hits and scored twice. The semi finals in the B division were
anticlimactic with the #1 and #2 seeds each winning by 15 runs. B'nai Brith
topped B'nai Or 20-5 and Chabad defeated Beth Shalom Livingston Temple Softball | ||||

Livingston Temple Softball League 07/12/15
The last team to beat Temple
Sharey Tefilo Israel was B'nai Jeshurun on 7/7/13. Since then they have 2
championships and back to back undefeated seasons while winning their last 35
games. They defeated B'nai Shalom 20-6 and had a forfeit win over AABJD to cap
off another #1 seeded undefeated season in the A division. AABJD (9-5) won
their 1st game 22-15 over B'nai Jeshurun and tied for 2nd in the upper
division. In the win, Ariel Fournier (HR, 3 RBI’s), Jeff Falkenstein (HR, 3 RBI’s),
Jay Gertleman (4 RBI’s), Zach and Rami Abramowitz (3 RBI’s each). They will be
the #2 seed by virtue of winning the tiebreaker with Pinebrook (9-5). The two
teams split their season series but AABJD’s average runs against was 12.58
while Pinebrook's was 13.58. AABJD was involved in 2 forfeits (1 win - 1 loss)
so by virtue of the new rule those games did not count in runs against. Pinebrook's
1st game was a 19-4 win against Temple Sinai (6-8) but they lost their 2nd game
18-17 to Suburban Torah (6-8). In that game the winners took a 1 run lead into
the bottom of the 7th and held Pinebrook scoreless. Temple Sinai will be the #4
seed because they swept the season series with Suburban Torah (#5). Temple
Sholom of West Essex defeated Suburban Torah in game 1 by a score of 20-8. In
the game they had a 14 run 3rd inning which was started by a grand slam off the
bat of Jeff Goldberger. Also leading the offense were Scott Suydam, Steve
Holinstat, and Dan Natt who each went 3-4. The 2nd game for TSWE was a 9-3 loss
to B'nai Shalom. The 1st round of the playoffs in the A division
will match #1 Sharey Tefilo Israel - #8 B’nai Jeshurun; #2 AABJD - #7 B’nai
Shalom; #3 Pinebrook - #6 Temple Sholom of West Essex; #4 Temple Sinai - #5
Suburban Torah.
It came down to the final
game in the B division and B’nai Brith (12-2) prevailed 9-6 over Chabad to
clinch 1st place. Chabad tied Beth Shalom for 2nd at 11-3
but will be the #2 seed since they defeated Beth Shalom in the only game they
played during the regular season. Beth Shalom swept this week’s double header
defeating Temple Emanu-El 11-6 with a very solid defense led by SS Steve
Siegal. On offense Doug Netburn was 3-3 with a HR and Mark Konstandt was 3-3.
Beth Shalom’s 2nd game was a 25-10 win against B’nai Israel with an
offense led by Jeff Katz (5-5 3 runs), Steve Siegal (3-3, 2B, 4 runs), Neil Grossman
(4-4, 3B, 5 RBI’s). Phil Sperling, Dan Bank and Gabe Ollins each had 3 hits and
3 runs scored. B’nai Or secured the 4th seed with a split of their
DH despite having only 9 players for both games, topping Ner Tamid 12-3 in the
1st game and losing a 12-11 decision to B’nai Abraham in game 2. In
game 1 win Adam Forman had 2 doubles, 3 RBI’s, 3 runs and Keith Barbarosh
blasted a 3 run triple with 3 hits and 2 runs. Also, Eric Axler (1B, 2B, 3B, 3
runs), and pitcher Bill Schlosser (3 hits). On defense, Ira Forman had 2
putouts at the plate. Against B’nai Abraham, Keith Barbarosh’s 2nd
inning grand slam gave B’nai Or the lead which they held until the 6th
inning at 9-8. They scored 2 more for 11 but B’nai Abraham countered with 4
more for the 12-11 win. Agudath Israel won their two games beating B’nai Abraham
6-2 and AABJD/Ohr Torah 20-5 and will be the #5 seed for the playoffs. Greg Adelsberg led the way in the 1st game with a HR. In the 2nd
game Robert Field had a homer, Scott Reiser went 4-4 and Charlie Kessler was a
homerun shy of the cycle. Temple Emanu-El defeated Ner Tamid 15-9 and will be
the #6 seed in the playoffs. In the loss for Ner Tamid, Rob Crum had a homerun.
On the day for Ner Tamid, Bob Perris had a long triple and two doubles.
Playoff matchups for the B division as follows:
#1 B’nai Brith-#8 B’nai Abraham;
#2 Chabad - #7 B’nai Israel;
#3 Beth Shalom - #6 Temple Emanu-El;
#4 B’nai Or - #5 Agudath Israel.

Livingston Temple Softball League 07/05/15
Sharey Tefilo Israel (12-0) was
the recipient of the only forfeit of the holiday weekend as they continue on
the road to back to back undefeated seasons. AABJD (8-4) and Pinebrook (8-4)
remained tied for 2nd in the A division with both winning on Sunday. AABJD was led by Marty Moskovitz who was 3-3
with a triple and 5 RBI's in their 19-4 win over B'nai Shalom. Pinebrook
followed suit with a 20-15 win against Temple Sholom. Suburban Torah's 4 game
winning streak came to an end withTemple Sinai defeating them 18-5. If AABJD
and Pinebrook tie for 2nd it might come down to least runs allowed as the
tiebreaker. As per league rule, it is the average runs per game given up so
that forfeits do not count. Going into this week Pinebrook is at 13.5 and AABJD
is at 13.63. If there is a 3 way tie at 8-6 with Temple Sinai then AABJD holds
the 3 way tiebreaker with a 3-1 record among the group.
In the B division there is
still a tie for 1st between Chabad and B'nai Brith at 10-2. B'nai Brith won the only
meeting so far between the two teams but they also meet in the final game of
the season which will probably determine the #1 seed. In Chabad's 15-8 win over
Agudath Israel they connected on 2 solo homeruns in the first 3 pitches of the
game. Pitcher Peter Gelman did not walk any batters in the win and had 3 hits
including an RBI triple to aid his cause. David Levine was 4-4 with 2 doubles, 2
homers and some phenomenal outfield defense thwarting any attempt by Agudath
Israel to make a come back. Ari Berman was 5-5 for AI in the loss. B'nai Brith
avenged an earlier loss to B'nai Israel with an 18-8 win. Beth Shalom defeated
B'nai Abraham 18-6 with Zach Cohen and Phil Sperling each having a triple and 4
hits. Steve Siegal had 3 hits and so did Neil Grossman who also had a 3 run
homer in the win. Ner Tamid got the better of AABJD Ohr/Torah by a 10-3 margin
on the strength of Rob Crum's 6 RBI's (grand slam in the 1st and a 2 run double
in the 6th). B'nai Or scored 4 runs in
the 1st inning but could only manage 1 the rest of the way in a 7-5 loss to
Temple Emanu-El. For the losers, Keth Barbarosh was 2-3, Adam Forman 2-2, and Scott
Charles 3-3. There is a very close race for the last playoff spot in the B
division. B'nai Abraham can lock it up but needs 2 wins or help from Ner Tamid
and AABJD/Ohr Torah.
